Pudding on the Rice; Provo, Utah
When I was growing up, there was never such a great treat as a bowl of my mom’s warm, homemade pudding. It didn’t matter if it was tapioca, vanilla or rice pudding, just as long as it was homemade. The first day I saw the sign reading ‘Pudding on the Rice’ all I could think was- it’s too good to be true! Judging by the name, I figured the store would serve rice pudding, but as I walked in I braced myself to find an average restaurant serving typical food that you could find on any street corner. I can’t tell you how happy I was to walk in and see rows of pudding in all sorts of flavors- Lemon Meringue, Pistachio, Rocky Road, Cheese Cake, Pina Colada and many more! I couldn’t wait to try them all. I have been back many times, each time trying a different flavor. I haven’t been disappointed yet.
The atmosphere at Pudding on the Rice is just about as good as the food they serve. Personally, when I think rice pudding I envision a plump little grandma wearing a frilly apron inside a kitchen full of nick knacks. Thank goodness they had different ideas! They took the simplicity of their food (15 different variations of rice, cream and sugar) and used it to create a perfect atmosphere. White round tables line a white wall decorated with large, frame-less photos. It really makes me feel like my mother’s homecooking has now become a necessary part of modern style.
When I heard they catered I couldn’t believe my ears! An image of a beautiful wedding reception filled my head, inspired by their amazing food and beautiful decor. Each table was covered in white linen. A food buffet stood in the center filled with a number of identical white square bowls, each filled with a different flavor of delicious, gourmet rice pudding. It would be simple and elegant. The food would be unique enough to stand alone and simple enough to please each guest.
When I called to get their catering prices I was even more excited. A 160 oz carton of pudding (feeds 40 people) goes for $40! You could feed your guests food that they would remember and talk about for a long time for only $1 per person!
I am so excited about this idea. In fact, I’m trying to find an excuse to invite over enough people to have Pudding on the Rice cater my own party! If you’re as excited as I am visit their website at puddingontherice.com or call 801-375- 5007 for more information.
