The Hottest Trends in Wedding Cakes

As the only writer for AffordableUtahWeddings.com I try my best to keep up with all the latest wedding trends, but sometimes it’s just better talk to a specialist!  Today I’m excited to do just that.  Tammisty, the owner of the local cake decorating business Tasteful Cakes, has kindly written an article for us sharing all her knowledge of the latest trends in wedding cakes.  Thanks so much Tammisty for sharing your time and talents!  Here’s what she said-

I love wedding cakes.  As the owner of Tasteful Cakes, a cake decorating business, I enjoy keeping up with the latest wedding cake trends.  Almost everything about wedding cakes has changed over the past few years.  I believe that the internet has played a major part in many of these changes.  No longer do brides go to their local bakery and pick out a cake from the baker’s cake book with fifteen different options.  Wedding cakes are no longer just a dessert.  They are a major style statement and focal point of the wedding reception.  I love custom designing cakes, but with most of the cakes I make, brides come to me with a picture of a cake they found on the internet and say, “I would like this cake…but with a few changes”.  Whether I help them design a custom cake or we do something similar to a cake they found on the internet, brides and grooms want their wedding cake to reflect their personal style.

Mini Cakes are probably one of the hottest new trends.  There are many different options with mini cakes.  The cupcake tower is very popular.  Most couples top their cupcake tower with a cake tier for the bride and groom.  Cupcakes usually save money in both the cost of the cake and in that you eliminate all cake cutting and serving costs.  Cupcakes can be decorated just as elaborately, elegantly, or creatively as wedding cake tiers.  Another trend and money saving option with mini cakes, is to use them as a centerpiece for each table.  Whether it’s one mini wedding cake per table or each table is topped with a mini cupcake tower, mini cakes make beautiful edible centerpieces.  Having guests serve themselves can be fun and saves money on serving fees.

Rolled fondant icing is becoming increasingly popular.  If it is not made fresh, it can taste chalky, but if it is made correctly and enriched with flavor, it is really yummy.  Fondant has a very smooth, porcelain like look that is liked by many and, as a cake decorator, it makes an excellent pallet for decorating.

Another hot trend is unique shapes.  Approximately half of the wedding cakes I make have square tiers and many are requesting hexagon, triangle, heart, or a combination of different shaped tiers on their wedding cake.  Bold colors are also popular.  Many brides still choose an all white cake, but bold colors that match the rest of the wedding décor are becoming more and more popular.  One of my favorite new trends is the metallic detail that may be added to cakes.  This can add a very elegant and fun touch.

Whether extremely luxurious, bold and fun, or simple and elegant…there is no limit to the options available.  Your wedding cake should say something about you…reflect your personal style.  At Tasteful Cakes, we pride ourselves in helping each couple come up with the perfect cake for them (at a great price).  Our cakes are not only beautiful, but extremely delicious.  We would love to meet with you.  Visit our website at www.tastefulcakesandcookies.com or call us at 801-230-0593 for a free tasting and consultation.
